The Island Pro

Island Pro: Bringing Paradise to the Server Rack

The ultimate design challenge: How do you make a rack-mounted router—traditionally the most utilitarian equipment imaginable—reflect the serene "Internet Paradise" brand philosophy while delivering 40Gbps of enterprise power?

Our breakthrough:
We evolved the Island Router's lighthouse-inspired calm into the Island Pro, introducing subtle palm-inspired patterns and refined details that transform mandatory rectangular specifications into an expression of craft and tranquility. Even in a server rack, Internet bliss was possible.

The result:
The first rack-mounted networking equipment that actually enhances rather than detracts from a professional environment. Red Dot Award 2025 recognition for proving that even the most technical requirements can embody sophistication and brand continuity.

The Details

  • The Problem: Island's residential router had proven that high-performance networking could be beautiful. But now came the ultimate test: create a rack-mounted version that maintains the brand's "Internet Paradise" philosophy while conforming to rigid data center specifications.

The Technical Reality: Rack-mounted equipment is governed by strict dimensional requirements, airflow constraints, and professional environment expectations. Every millimeter is accounted for, leaving seemingly no room for brand expression or aesthetic consideration.

The Brand Challenge: How do you evolve from the lighthouse-inspired calm of the original Island Router to something that works in server rooms and data centers, while still embodying the "Internet Paradise" ethos that made the brand distinctive?

The Market Gap: Professional networking equipment was universally sterile and forgettable. IT professionals deserved something that reflected the sophistication of the technology they were deploying.

  • While the original Island Router drew inspiration from lighthouse lenses, the Pro demanded a new visual metaphor that could work within rack constraints. We found our answer in palm fronds—the quintessential symbol of paradise that could translate into sophisticated surface patterns.

Why Palm-Inspired Patterns Worked: Palm fronds represent the same tranquility as lighthouses but in a format that could be subtly integrated into technical equipment. The organic patterns created visual interest without compromising the professional aesthetic required for data centers.

The Design Philosophy Evolution: Maintain the core "calm confidence" of the Island brand while adapting to the precision requirements of professional environments. Every detail needed to suggest craft and intentionality, even within mandatory rectangular specifications.

Strategic Brand Continuity: Rather than abandoning the residential router's success, we evolved the paradise theme to work across different contexts—from living rooms to server rooms, the Island experience remained consistent.

  • Visual Evolution: Instead of another anonymous black rectangle, we created rack-mounted equipment that IT professionals actually looked forward to installing. Subtle palm-inspired patterns transform the mandatory front panel into an expression of sophisticated craft.

Material Sophistication: Every surface detail reflects the Island commitment to quality and tranquility. The result feels intentional and premium, not like an afterthought to residential design.

Professional Elegance: The Island Pro proves that professional networking equipment doesn't have to sacrifice beauty for functionality. Technical precision and aesthetic refinement can coexist perfectly.

Brand Coherence: From the original lighthouse-inspired router to the palm-patterned Pro, Island maintained its paradise philosophy across radically different form factors and use cases.

The Industry Response: Red Dot Award 2025 recognition validated that even the most constrained technical requirements could embody sophisticated design thinking. IT professionals finally had networking equipment worthy of their expertise.
